Abstract

A bacterium which degrade alpha olefin sulfonate(AOS) was isolated from. the sludge of industrial areas, and identified as a strain of Azotobacter chroococcum
The medium for the optimal biodegradation of AOS by
Azotobacter chroococcum S41 was composed of (NH2)2CO 0.270, K2HPO4 0.2 %, KH2 PO4 0.05%, MgSO4.7H2O 0.0270, and yeast extract 0.039o. The optimal temperature and PH were 300C and 6.0 respectivdly.-The bacteria utilized best Mg"-¢¥. Fe¢¥ as a mineral , and (NH 2 ) 2CO as a nitrogen source.
The bacteria draw near stationary phase for 1 day at 30t in optimal medium containing AOS 40ppm. The biodegradation rate of AOS was about 757o for 1 day, and 95% for 8 days by Azotobacter chroococcumn S41 in above conditions.
